The 'S' was the entry-level sports option in the MK3 Fiesta range, offered as a wallet-friendly alternative to the XR2i (and later RS Turbo). Powered by a 90ps version of Ford's 1.6 CVH with electronic ignition and twin-venturi carb via 5-speed manual gearbox, and featuring sports suspension, wider wheels and upgraded brakes over the standard models. Visual changes included unique bumpers, long-range driving lamps, rear spoiler and a sports interior with bespoke 'Thirsk' fabric - so the S was (and still is) instantly recognisable.
